Lesson 9: The Lexical Approach
"Language is built from chunks, not just grammar rules."
Watch and Learn
1. What is the Lexical Approach?
Most people think learning a language means memorizing single words and grammar rules. This is hard! The Lexical Approach is different.
Lexis means learning words in groups or "chunks." Instead of just learning the word "make," you learn the whole phrase "make a decision." Your brain remembers these chunks much faster than tiny, separate pieces.
2. The "Chunk" Concept
Think of language like a pre-made meal. You don't have to cook every single ingredient from scratch because the meal is already put together for you.
- Speaking is faster: You don't have to stop and think about grammar rules.
- You sound natural: Using chunks makes you sound like a native speaker.
- Less stress: Your brain has "ready-made" phrases to use.
3. Lexis vs. Vocabulary
People often think vocabulary means just single words (like "car," "go," "big"). But Lexis is much bigger. It includes single words, but also common phrases, and even whole sentences that we use in set situations. Learning these helps you speak naturally without "thinking in grammar."
4. Reformulation: The Secret Tool
In this approach, teachers don't just shout "Wrong!" when you make a mistake. Instead, they use reformulation. If you say "I make a photo," the teacher says, "Oh, you mean you want to *take* a photo?" It helps you hear the natural chunk without feeling bad about a mistake.
Exercise 1: Match the Chunk
Match the chunk on the left to its type on the right.
